I Want Change, But How Do I Start?

Everyday we hear about people who want to go to the gym, want to lose weight, or want to get back in the body they had when they were in their teens/twenties. Why do most people not just go to the gym? Why do they not go for a run? why don’t they just choose the salad? Well because they don’t know where to start. The modern lifestyle is one that has become increasingly complicated which may be making it unnecessarily hard to make changes in your life. Many people believe that in order for them to see results they need to exercise some special way, eat some magical food, or  take some super pill.

So why not just go to the gym?

From the outside looking in, the gym can be a very intimidating place. To the untrained eye it seems that everyone working out in a gym knows what they are doing and no one wants to be the one to walk in and look stupid or out of place. They don’t want to accidently get in someone’s way, or be noticed in anyway.  Is that not why most people will join the gym to change themselves enough to get noticed? But not now not before they have gotten their results for now they want to remain a ghost. The fact of the matter is that most people who want to start an exercise program will have some sort of issues with their self esteem which will compound further in the fast paced environment of a commercial fitness club.

So if they gym is out of the question then the question still remains: “where do I start?” And the answer is ….. Anywhere. When you want to make changes in your life to become healthier, or attain that body you’ve always wanted it’s best to start small. It is unrealistic to think that you are suddenly going to be able to commit to a 5 day a week workout program, and completely overhaul your diet, begin to take all the right supplements, and do all the right things your first day. Actually this is far from reality, you probably would be able to go for a walk that day, or have a salad with your dinner instead of French fries, or even take a multi vitamin. However what about the next day? You could go for a walk again but you likely will have to go to work, take that multi vitamin with breakfast, oh but you forgot. What about the salad for dinner? Well fries taste better anyways.

So next time you feel like you want to change your life, take actions towards doing so. Go for that walk, order the salad, or take the vitamin. Every step you take towards a healthier you will pay off in the long run. You will start to see more changes when you take more steps in a row towards your goal, and eventually they won’t seem like your taking steps at all it will become a part of your everyday lifestyle.  Start small to achieve big.
